The Astrology of Adele and Planet Saturn Returns

I’m a huge fan of Adele – now more than ever. Perhaps with my Pisces Sun, Moon, Mercury and Ceres, I was born to be a “Daydreamer” long before the phrase was coined about her lovely song and super fans.
 
I was and still am thoroughly tickled to see how Adele gave distinct tribute to planet Saturn with those magnificent earrings she wore for her recent CBS television special, “One Night Only”. I admire and appreciate Adele for bringing not only her musical talent but also astrology to center stage with glamour and gracious elegance. Bravo and encore.
 
Looking at Adele’s natal chart calculated using Astro.com, I wish we had an “AA” Rodden Rating for Adele’s birth time to know without question if the house wheel above is accurate based on her birth certificate. The published “B” rating source is based on a book biography that hasn’t been verified by the source (Adele, if you’re reading this please do contact me to confirm.)
 
While it would make perfect sense that Adele has the sensitive and emotional water sign of Cancer as her Ascendant, I’d rather be 100% sure before spouting spiritual or astrological mishegas. However, there are plenty of other details that clearly show how Adele is fully living her birth chart potential.

Firstly, being born with planets Sun and Jupiter closely connected by a 2° conjunction in zodiac sign Taurus suggests a strong and hearty vocal prowess. In Medical Astrology, Taurus rules the throat, neck and also the voice. The Sun represents our ego, identity and self-expression while Jupiter, a social planet, signifies our wealth prospects and where or how we seek to expand our world.
 
Generally speaking, Sun conjunct Jupiter is an overall indicator of substantial luck, wealth, and abundance. This certainly rings true for Adele.
 
Her natal Sun also harmonizes beautifully in trine to Neptune which symbolizes imagination, creativity, music and the subconscious collective. With Neptune in zodiac sign Capricorn she’s able to organize and build a business empire by tapping into our universal consciousness.
 
Additionally, the guardian planet for Taurus is Venus which rules money, young girls, varied art forms including music, and love. Blending all factors together from Sun and Jupiter in Taurus reaffirms Adele is guided by and utilizing the natural powers of the cosmos.
 
Notice planet Pluto sits opposite to the Sun and Jupiter in the constellation Scorpio, known for intensity and digging beneath superficial surfaces. In Modern Astrology, Pluto also rules over Scorpio. Three important keywords for Pluto are power, control and transformation.
 
The Sun-Jupiter versus Pluto opposition configuration is dynamic, highly charged and necessitates balance to achieve benefits rather than stress. Imagine yourself as a child playing on a seesaw continually moving up and down. In astrology the optimal position for this type of alignment is to remain flat and even, but in real life that’s simply impossible. We’re going to have ups and downs.
 
The positive use of Adele’s Sun-Jupiter opposition to Pluto shows up as her inner power to control and regenerate her life. When out of balance or pushing herself too hard, undesired outcomes can result such as needing vocal surgery.
 
We can also see a red triangle shape that links this Sun conjunct Jupiter opposite Pluto pattern to Mars in Aquarius at a 90° square angle. Astrologers call this energizing planetary set up a “T-square”. Mars in Aquarius suggests an independent streak or hankering for rebellious actions that may lead to aggravation and/or anger.
 
Luckily it appears Adele has worked through these most difficult energies, and as wisdom often comes with age, she sought greater knowledge from within. She inevitably chose good health practices, quit drinking alcohol, and became physically active to channel an edgy Mars in more constructive ways.
 
Further checking two additional personal planets, Mercury and Venus in Gemini indicate fun and lightness in love where intellect and laughter are much desired. In fact, Adele mentioned during her interview with Oprah how she’s attracted to her present romantic partner because he’s “hilarious” and “very, very smart”.
 
Notably, Adele’s natal Venus most tightly conjoins Chiron the Centaur at 25° Gemini. Chiron is often titled “The Wounded Healer” as one proficient in healing the pain of others yet unable to heal themselves. Adele’s heart wrenching balladeer love songs certainly highlight and emulate this Venus-Chiron combo.
 
One might even say this Venus-Chiron conjunction at the exact same degree is therefore the strongest focal point for her life. It suggests healing relationships, love and financial matters are integral to Adele’s core personality.
 
We can also see an opposition arrangement with Venus sitting alone in contrast to the Moon, Saturn and Uranus. Finding emotional balance in love and relationships while uniting responsibility and inventiveness without unrest is one quick way to evaluate and/or synergize this complex positioning of planets.
 
To complete the summary, Adele’s natal North Node is in Pisces. This again highlights a life direction meant for universal love, music, compassion and imagination. In juxtaposition, the opposing South Node is in Virgo, the sign of cleanliness, organization, diet and health.
 
Since the South Node represents past life matters and things that feel familiar, this placement gives Adele an innate ability to tap into practical Virgo qualities and apply them at her discretion. It appears that’s exactly what Adele has done to “clean up her act” at a personal level.
 
Now let’s move on to the Saturn return in astrology and why this cyclical transit is such a big deal. Refer to the astrology chart calculated below for Adele's Saturn return planetary set ups.

Saturn represents the building block for our most basic life structures. Saturn is also called “Father Time” in mythology. Keywords associated with this planet are responsibility, discipline, maturity, patience and persistence. Saturn comes on the scene to show us life lessons as a teacher.
 
Even when we’re not listening or observing his messages, Saturn can feel like a stern taskmaster. Saturn helps us focus on hard work and building something slowly over time. Saturn, like Jupiter, is considered a social – not personal – planet.
 
All outer planets starting with Jupiter travel through the 12 zodiac for a specified length of time, as shown by reading an ephemeris. Saturn takes roughly 2.5 years to transit through each zodiac sign. With 12 signs and a 360° zodiac wheel, it therefore takes Saturn approximately 29-30 years to fully transit back to the identical location by degree as where it was in the constellations when we’re born.
 
And that my friends, is called your “Saturn Return”. Hopefully you’ll live long enough to enjoy at least two or three. Our first Saturn return around age 29 (say 28-30) wakes us up to the fact that we’re no longer young and with adulthood there’s no more time to waste. Especially during the first Saturn return, it’s a pivotal moment for making grown-up type changes that require accountability.
 
Many astute astrologers often advise clients to respect Saturn. I often say, use the planetary energies lest they use you. Apparently Adele has given homage to Saturn in a huge way not only by wearing brilliant Saturnian-designed earrings during her concert, but also by previously inking a widely visible tattoo of Saturn on her arm.
 
The year of 2018 is precisely when Adele experienced her Saturn return. That January, Saturn swiftly jaunted past her 2° Capricorn natal Saturn placement, and then paused, or “stationed”, turning retrograde at 9° Capricorn in April. Shortly thereafter during the second half of August through the month of September, Saturn positioned itself for a good length of time again at 2° Capricorn conjunct her natal Saturn.
 
Astrologically it’s significant when any planet stations to move either retrograde or direct at the same degree of someone’s natal planet. It denotes there’s an important lesson to learn, whether we recognize it or not. As the ephemeris shows transiting taskmaster Saturn stationed precisely on her natal Saturn for well over a month, we can see why Adele’s Saturn return was monumental and totally life changing.
 
When analyzing astrology it’s also imperative to recognize that all charts and transits in motion work together like pieces of a puzzle we’re supposed to solve. So along with the Saturn return, let’s also review the surrounding planetary dynamics for clues on how these alignments would likely vibrate or resonate.
 
During the latter part of her Saturn return in September 2018 while transiting Saturn stationed direct, transiting Mercury in logical and practical sign Virgo was in a 120° aspect to Adele’s Saturn return. An aspect is a mathematical angle making contact between two or more planets. Astrology terminology for a 120° aspect is called a “trine”. It represents a relaxed energetic flow where things come easy.
 
This pairing of Mercury with Adele’s Saturn return suggests a divine mental understanding that it was her own responsibility to make major life adjustments. Additionally, transiting Uranus in Taurus was also 120° trine Adele’s Saturn return, liberating and freeing Adele to become more like her envisioned true and future adult self.
 
Note the above transiting Saturn return in Capricorn combined with Mercury in Virgo and Uranus in Taurus were all tightly connected at exactly 2° producing what’s called a “Grand Trine” configuration. In a manner of speaking: Saturn, Mercury and Uranus found each other and united in harmonious bliss! Having this wonderful pattern in solid Earth signs is wondrously magical for grounding and manifesting whatever the heart really wants.
 
For an equally enormous stroke of luck, the transiting Sun at 14° Virgo made a trine aspect for a breezy flow of energies with Adele’s natal Sun-Jupiter conjunction, which enhanced her natural born luck once again. Although it may not have seemed lucky at the time, ultimately when we make necessary revisions we adapt and benefit in the long run.
 
I’ll add here that in general the “Fixed” signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius have a harder time changing patterns and adjusting. These zodiac signs usually prefer life remain as is in their comfort zone to a point where “fixed” can mean “stuck”. Taureans especially are known for this.
 
Also worth noting in Adele’s Saturn Return chart is the prominence of transiting Chiron at 0° Aries in exact opportunistic “sextile” to her natal Mercury at 0° Gemini. That cosmic Chiron-Mercury aspect combo specifies a theme of independence and bravery in healing wounds while also integrating intelligent mindfulness in the process.
 
Perhaps the heightened testing and crucial challenges came from transiting Jupiter at 18° Scorpio in an exact 90° “square” aspect to Adele’s natal Mars at 18° Aquarius. This combination infers her deep need to explore personal inward growth as she described to Oprah. Combined with the other above simultaneous transits, she knew the smartest path meant not wreaking havoc like a spirited rebel.
 
Through astrology it’s apparent during Adele’s Saturn return she was destined for learning to mature as both an individual and parent, and that she splendidly succeeded in these goals.
 
When we reach this important astrological pinnacle of the Saturn return it is typical how seemingly dramatic events will occur in our lives. As for me all those years ago, I opted to relocate from South Florida to California to start a brand new beginning as an aspiring singer/songwriter (pka Trudee Lunden). I distinctly remember how I felt an urge like it was now or never.
 
I’d just lost my day job as a travel agent. I had enough cash to buy a non-refundable one-way airline ticket. I was at the airport when I phoned my father living in CA to let him know I was about to board a flight to L.A. I jumped into the fire heart first and head later. With no advance warning, I didn’t give Dad a chance to tell me “no” or “wait” – which I knew he would have done.
 
I sensed my Saturn return a little early at age 28. I was actually more swayed by transiting Uranus, the planet of sudden surprise events. Uranus conjoined and hovered directly over my North Node in the fourth house area of home and family in my natal chart. No wonder I had a lightning bolt impulse to relocate, shocking everyone including me!
 
There’s no doubt about it. When our first Saturn return beckons, we feel NOW is the time to make important and necessary changes. I can assure you it’s usually much easier the second time around. All that said, right now I need to buy myself a pair of Saturn earrings to support me being more focused and disciplined while foggy and dreamy transiting Neptune sits conjunct my natal Sun.
 
Maybe I’ll double my pleasure and buy myself a Saturn hat to match those Saturn earrings.
